The focus on Music and Minorities at the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology (IVE) of mdw was established by Ursula Hemetek in 1990. In addition to her, Marko Kölbl and Hande Sağlam are currently working in this area at the department. The focus is evident in research and teaching at the IVE: numerous publications have been issued on this topic and the department regularly hosts related events.
